I kept thinking that all will be revealed at the end but I was just left with a lot of unanswered questions. I couldn’t believe that it was the year 2022, and people were still vilifying aging in women and getting adulation for it. And yet — we’re a long way away from women being able to rejoice in their naked bodies without judgment, particularly if the woman in question dares to be anything other than 20-years-old and a size zero. There were many good points brought up – for instance Titian “famous” painting “Rape of Europa” which is a prelude to a rape or the famous sculpture by Giambologna “The Rape of the Sabines” in the open square of the Piazza della Signoria in Florence, Italy. Made in the ’70s and ’80s, these were the only works that Tanning had always wanted – and never had – exhibited in a group.

Yet seeing art historian Catherine McCormack list these societal misgivings and thus missed opportunities to celebrate brilliant female artists is daunting to say the least. While some of the connections or comments made in Women in the Picture didn't entirely resonate with me, I gained many new ideas and considerations from this book. My assumption is that today, works of art influenced by culture and works of art influencing culture are not easily distinguishable.

This autumn saw a solo exhibition of the late African-American photographer Gordon Parks, following a stunning solo booth at Frieze Masters last October. Several photographs offer variations on the chapter’s theme, including one from Eti Wade’s 2014 “ Migrant Mothers” series in which an immigrant caregiver in London holds on her lap not her own child but a laptop computer with her daughter’s image streaming from the Philippines.
