Description

Fascination is presented here in a brand-new transfer from the only remaining copy of the film known to exist - a nitrate print.

Rollin's a true original, his films truly aren't like anyone else's, and I award big points for originality. For instance, the "action" and gunplay scenes at the beginning of this film are very amateurishly shot and staged. A significant degree of the credit for this successful character interplay can be laid at the door of director Miles Mander. If you're open to unconventional films, you owe it to yourself to check out Fascination, or any Jean Rollin films other than Zombie Lake.

There are loads of clips and stills used here to represent the director's work and this documentary, while not quite comprehensive given that it was made before Rollin finished working, is quite a great addition to this release - it's also presented in high definition. Also present are two highly desirable softcore outtakes (with Lahaie) totalling around fifteen minutes and apparently shot if the film was required for export to more liberal territories, plus a twenty five minute documentary about Rollin that I originally saw broadcast on British TV surprisingly.Like so many of the director's pictures, this one might be best enjoyed as a fever dream of unusual and at times surreal images and scenes rather than as a linear plot or traditionally structured film but that's a big part of what makes Rollin's films so special - like the best works of art, they really do mean different things to different people. It is, however, a huge step in the right direction in terms of giving this director's work the respectful presentations that some of us feel it has long deserved.

A new commentary by Jeremy Richey is a welcome addition covering the progression to this film in the wake of Rollin's financial difficulties (including the failure of Lips of Blood and his gun-for-hire work in the adult film industry), the literary and artistic influences at play here, the relationships to his more traditional vampire projects, and the contributions of other crew and cast members here.Madeleine Carroll - soon to find fame as Hitchcock's premiere ice blonde in The 39 Steps - stars in this risqué comedy of manners and infidelity, an early talkie from 1931.
